Summer Program Director Cora Garner is an American Camp Association Member. She came to us after working at Cornell University, Stanford University, and most recently the University of California, Berkeley. Through her work in Higher Education, she has developed and taught courses that focus on identity and community development.

At Girls Leadership we want you to be true-to-you. Every day starts with community games. Our theatre-based workshops focus on developing personal and societal leadership, such as how to ask for what you need. In these sessions girls practice new tools for speaking up for themselves and for others.

We also create beautiful art projects, stay active outside, and always have a spirit theme for the day. These activities are designed to encourage girls to embrace who they are, reflect on what they believe, and give them an opportunity to express themselves creatively.

CAMP FACILITIES: Come spend the summer at resident YMCA Camp Weona and discover what dreams are made of in a place “where only good prevails.” With over a century of camping experience, and built on the Christian heritage of the YMCA, we value honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. YMCA Camp Weona offers both traditional and high adventure activities. Horseback riding through the forest, kayaking under the blue sky, making new friends, singing by the campfire, jumping into the refreshing pool, learning how to set up a campsite, fishing at the lake; each day is full of adventure. YMCA Camp Weona serves children 7 to 17 years old with exciting summer camp options for one, or two or more week stays. All campers live in one of 18 rustic bunk style cabins with shared restrooms facilities. Campers return home with increased self esteem, friendship building skills, and the ability to make good decisions on their own. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: We pride ourselves in selecting staff that are role models of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. As a result, the YMCA Camp Weona culture and setting are safe, fun, and enriching physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. We recruit from local high schools and colleges, as well as all over the country and around the world. All staff participate in an intensive week-long residential training that includes safety management, working with children in group settings, leading activities, camp policies and procedures, and child abuse prevention. Necessary staff members are lifeguard, CPR, and first aid certified as well as other nationally-recognized certifications. YMCA Camp Weona takes the health and safety of our campers very seriously.

We have a 6:1 camper-to-leader ratio which assures close supervision of all activities. During the summer session a fulltime health officer lives on site and a physician is on call 24 hours a day. Also, YMCA Camp Weona is certified by the New York State Health Department and has periodic inspections throughout the summer. YMCA Camp Weona is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). ACA is a non-profit organization that member camps join voluntarily. For nearly two decades, YMCA Camp Weona has been a member of this organization and on a semi-annual basis is visited by ACA, which verifies that we are maintaining over 300 standards of operation in camping. CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Building on the tradition of “super” leadership, the YMCA believes in growing our future leaders as well as enhancing our teen population’s skill base. Leaders in Training (LIT) is geared toward teens who are ready to test their leadership skills while working with younger campers. All LITs must demonstrate the YMCA’s core values, have a service mentality, and strong desire to learn and grow leadership skills. Participating as an LIT may count toward high school community service hours for graduation. CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: At YMCA Camp Weona, we believe that every child should have the chance to experience camp. The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign provides financial assistance to families within our community who are in need of financial support and may not have the ability to pay the full fee. Financial assistance is determined based on a thorough review of an application and a personal interview with the applicant. Assistance will be granted on the basis of financial need resulting from low income, emergency expenses or other circumstances that inhibit an individual’s ability to pay a prescribed fee. As part of our mission, we teach campers responsibility with an opportunity to Earn Their Way to Camp. Campers may choose to pay for part or all of their camp fees through the annual YMCA Camp Candy Sale which runs from January through July.

OTHER CAMP INFO: YMCA Camp Weona is a “Group Work” Camp. At YMCA Camp Weona, our rustic cabins provide a home for small groups of no more than 12 campers who live together and attend daily activities as a group. Cabin groups are made up of either boys or girls entering similar grades and registered for the same camp program. Groups of 8-12 campers of similar gender and age attend daily activities together as a cabin with their leaders. The intention is to foster a “family-like” atmosphere within the group. Menu - Our back-to-basics menu is prepared each day in the dining hall. The YMCA offers items that children enjoy in their daily life that help sustain the additional energy needed during long days at camp. Our food service staff prides themselves on the fact that there are no trans fats in our meals. Special consideration is given for children who have allergies or prefer a vegetarian option.

Cabin/Bunk Mates - Campers may request a bunk mate within one school grade of each other, are of the same gender, and are registered for the same program. A bunk mate request is included in the parent pack and must be returned three weeks prior to attendance. Requests made after the three-week deadline may not be honored. In order to promote inclusion within each cabin, only one bunk mate request per child will be honored. (Bunk mates must be reciprocal – ex. John picks Tim and Tim must pick John.) Groups of four or more may be split to promote new camper inclusion.

CAMP FACILITIES: The Queens College is a beautiful landscaped 79-acre campus with out-door and in-door tennis courts and playing fields for soccer, softball and lacrosse. The Fitzgerald Gym is 40,000+ sq ft. basketball and volleyball courts and an 25 yard length pool.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: EDUCATION AND SPORTS PROGRAM: ages 5 -14 This program provides enrichment for youngsters who wish to develop talents and interests outside their regular schools. Faculty members have been selected for their ability to communicate the joy of learning to young students and to promote invention, creativity, and self-expression. Queens College facilities are among the best in the City. The spacious Fitzgerald Gym houses an Olympic-standard pool and basketball courts. Outdoor facilities include tennis courts, softball fields and soccer fields. Children ages 9 to 14 can choose a major/minor program that allows them to experience a number of different sports.

THEATER PRODUCTION: ages 9-14
Do you enjoy acting? Do you like to dance? Are you artistic—can you create scenery and costumes? Or would you rather go behind the scenes and become a stage manager? This program will teach campers the many different aspects to creating a successful musical play. The Theater Production will stimulate your child’s imagination while equipping them with valuable traits such as self-esteem and confidence. Join the fun as we put together a musical for parents and peers to see! Past musicals have included The Little Mermaid, Jungle Book, Oliver, Mary Poppins, and others!

LITTLE THEATER: ages 5 - 8
We will work on our dancing, singing and acting in the mornings then go have fun in the gym and fields in the afternoon along with instructional swim time. This year we're looking forward a production of Lion King and 101 Dalmatians. It's adorable!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Bonjour NY is a French immersion summer camp located in the heart of New York City. We offer weekly registration from 1 to 9 weeks. Bonjour NY was elected "best camp attended in NY" by our families, is accredited by the American Camp Association and is a NYC licensed.

Our campers spend a lot of time outdoors playing sports, water games, swimming, going out on fun trips to local farms, making bread at local French bakeries.... The staff engages in French only with the campers through live games, songs, arts...

CAMP FACILITIES: Campers attending Shankitunk for a week of summer fun will be assigned to one of our 15 rustic wooden cabins along the meadows edge. We have an outdoor swimming pool, low ropes course, basketball court, volleyball court, dining hall, craft hall, recreation pavilion, soccer field, archery range, Science Center, bathhouse with hot water and showers, maintenance shop, hiking trails, and river access for nature exploration.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: 4-H Camp Shankitunk is the oldest continuously operating 4-H camp in New York State. We first opened in 1927 as a vacation getaway for farm children in Delaware County, and have been providing a memorable experience for campers from all over the state and even other states ever since.

Our program has many rich traditions that have inspired grown campers to send their children back and even their grandchildren. Our chicken BBQ dinner, visit from the Delaware County Dairy Princess, closing candle ceremony, songs, class options, friendships, and flag salute are just a few. We hire a staff of approximately 40 each year, many of whom have been with us since they were old enough to attend Shankitunk themselves, but we love to welcome new faces into our camp family too. CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Shankitunk does offer a CIT program for campers age 14 and older who are interested in becoming future counselors. Campers complete level one in team-building, level two in communication and self reflection, and then attend a two week program where they devote all of their class time the first week to becoming a counselor and spend the second week shadowing a counselor to apply what they have learned. CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: (open to campers 15-16 years of age) Are you looking for a way to have a positive impact in your community? Are you thinking of a future career working with children? The Counselor in Training (CIT) program could be just the thing for you! Many of our counselors started out as CITs themselves.

This two-week program allows CITs to gain practical experience working with campers by assisting counselors during classes, afternoon recreational activities, evening programs, and in cabins. Not only will CITs get hands-on leadership experience, they will also attend workshops from Directors and other leaders at camp on a variety of topics such as behavior and risk management, interviewing tips and managing stress – to name a few.

CITs successfully completing the program will be considered for hire in 2016. CIT campers must attend two consecutive weeks. Housing and supervision is not available over the weekend, requiring CITs to return home.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our Media Arts Lab is the home of our education programs. At the core of our mission is the belief that viewing and creating media is an essential component to 21st century literacy. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: In Filmmaking Camp, campers will create a short film with the support of film-loving peers and the guidance of a professional film instructor. CAMP FACILITIES: Campers stay in secure, clean, modern corridor-style residence halls dedicated to summer campers. Males and females are housed in separate buildings. When not in class or practice, students have lots of fun participating in a variety of recreational activities including outdoor games like "Capture the Flag" and "Ultimate Frisbee," indoor games, movies, visits to a nearby lake for picnics and campfires, hikes, relaxing and socializing at the village Coffee House and each camp closes with a farewell party the last night of their camp.

CAMP FACILITIES: Students will use Hofstra's top-notch facilities, including their Olympic sized pool, while being taught by experts from Nassau BOCES. Time will be split between the classroom and the pool, where students will design and build a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and learn about methods in underwater archaeology.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The course will begin with an introduction to the history of marine exploration. Then, as part of a team, they will design and build an underwater ROV and test their designs in the water. Students will also have the opportunity to work with a marine archaeologist and participate in an antique "helmet dive" in Hofstra's pool.
